Brief Description
Volvo 3P, SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden and Chalmers University of Technology collaborate in a project for truck applications within the Vehicle Research Programme. Now we are looking for a PhD student to work on the area: Optimal vehicle design based on mathematical/statistical descriptions of customer usage.

Job description
Several sources of information can be identified about customer usage with respect to vehicle durability:

  • On-Board logging of vehicles in usage
  • Road profile data
  • Map information
  • Dedicated measurements on special equipped vehicles
  • Failure statistics

The availability of this type of information increases in vehicle industry, giving new opportunities to optimize vehicle properties. However, in order to extract relevant knowledge from huge data sets it is necessary both to know the demands from the vehicle designers and to use advanced applications of mathematical modelling and statistical methods.

The PhD student will work on this problem in close cooperation with Volvo 3P, supported by studies in mathematical statistics at the department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate level.

Required qualifications
Applicants must have a strong background in mathematical statistics and must have obtained a master`s degree or a 4-year bachelor`s degree. Previous experiences in industrial applications would be appreciated.

Application procedure
The application shall be written in English and include the following items:

  1. An application of a maximum of one A4 page containing your specific qualifications for the position
  2. Attested copies of education certificates, including grade reports and other documents
  3. Curriculum Vitae
  4. Letters of recommendation and name of reference persons (optional)

The application shall be sent electronically as pdf or zipped documents. Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form.

If any material is not available electronically or cannot be transferred to pdf format, the material can be sent as a hard copy to Registrar. The applicants name and the reference number (2011/64) must be written on the first page of the application.
