Brief Description
The Department of Architecture at Chalmers has a strong sustainability profile and works on crucial social issues with an openly exploratory and practice-based approach within four areas: Building Design, Space and Process, Urban Design and Planning, Architectural Conservation and Transformation. The department is now taking the next step in developing architecture and urban planning of the highest artistic and scientific quality. The Department has roughly 60 employees. We are situated on campus Johanneberg.
We now announce a full time post doc position in Parametric Design for the academic year 2011-2012.
Job description
Parametric design is a methodology using advanced visualization technology and mathematical algorithms to optimize structure and material form to advance resource efficiency and innovative solutions within in the area of built environment. Chalmers intends to augment Parametric design within research and development as well as education to support and develop new initiatives in the Area of Advance Built Environment.
The parametric design group will aim to develop conceptual tools based on rule-based systems (such as parametrics, computation, optimization and mathematical/algorithmic procedures) and extend their use in architecture and engineering practice. The group will work with a large range of established tools as well as research opportunities made available by the huge spread of computation and computational skills permeating all aspects of man-made artifacts and the increasing importance of cross-disciplinary research and collaboration.
The range of scales will stretch from the smallest (nano-materials), to process (digital manufacturing), to man-sized (architecture) through to the largest (urban planning and infrastructure), but will remain focused on the tangible scale that is represented by architecture.
The post doc position will be based at the Department of Architecture, and the main tasks are to develop research projects and applications as well as coordinating parametric design initiatives in research and education within Area of Strength Built Environment at Chalmers.
Required qualifications
The position requires a doctoral degree and relevant research and teaching experience. The candidate must have a background and interest in computing and architecture, but the background can be wider to include degree(s) in architecture, engineering, computer sciences, applied mathematics. The position also requires good language and communications skills, and it is also considered a merit to have an international network.
Application procedure
The application shall be written in English and include the following items:
The application shall be sent electronically. Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form.
The documents according to items 1-4 above shall be attached as two pdf-files.
One should contain items 1-3 in the listing of material to be included in the application The other should contain item 4 in the listing of material, and any other appendices.
The files may be compressed (zipped).
If any material is not available electronically or cannot be transferred to pdf format, the material can be sent as a hard copy to Registrar. The applicants name and the reference number (2011/5) must be written on the first page of the application.
